Moncler was born in Monestier-de-Clermont, Grenoble, France, in 1952 and is currently based in Italy. The origins of the name are contained in its roots: Moncler is in fact the abbreviation of Monestier-de-Clermont, a mountain village near Grenoble. Here René Ramillon and Andrè Vincent founded the company that will give life to the famous duvet.
At first, Moncler produced padded sleeping bags, a single model of lined cape with hood and tents with telescopic structure and external cover. It is these robust and functional items that immediately meet the public's favor, while the new social phenomenon of mountain holidays is established.
The first down jackets were designed to protect the workers who wear them over their overalls in the small mountain factory from the cold. The French alpinist Lionel Terray will notice them and intuit their potential. Thus was born the specialized line 'Moncler pour Lionel Terray': down jackets, dungarees, gloves, sleeping bags with high resistance and protection for the most extreme climates.
All new items are put to the test over the course of various expeditions and progressively refined. The same year, Moncler down jackets were chosen to equip the Italian expedition on K2 (8,611 meters), which culminated in the conquest of the second highest peak in the world by Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli.
Over the years, the brand has combined style with constant technological research assisted by experts in the field of activities related to the world of the mountains. Moncler collections combine the most extreme needs of outerwear with metropolitan everyday life.
In 2003 Remo Ruffini took over the Maison of which he is President and CEO.
In 2010 the Moncler Grenoble men's and women's collection made its debut in New York, which for the first time reinterprets the styles of the past and revisits the heritage, giving a contemporary cut to both ski clothing and after-ski clothing. as well as garments with a more urban vocation.
Moncler directly produces and distributes the clothing and accessories collections under the Moncler brand through direct boutiques and through the most exclusive Department Stores and international multi-brands.
